“The Lord Chooses…”
The Lord said:
“Jeremiah, I am your Creator, and before you were born, I chose you to speak for me to the nations.”
I replied, “I’m not a good speaker, Lord, and I’m too young,” the Lord answered. “If I tell you to go and speak to someone, then go! And when I tell you what to say, don’t leave out a word! I promise to be with you and keep you safe, so don’t be afraid.” (Jeremiah 1:4-8)
Isn’t it amazing how we sometimes feel it necessary to tell God how to handle his business. We say, He is omniscient and yet we feel we have to tell him something that he doesn’t already know. He knows our thoughts before we do- good, bad and indifferent. How many of us are guilty of doing what this prophet did? Jeremiah felt it necessary to point out his weaknesses to God. Imagine that! Did he not realize that God already knew these things about him? Or was he just making excuses because he did not want to do was being required of him? Perhaps Jeremiah had other ideas about why God created him.
If you want a great example of planned- parenthood then you need look no further than the Creator. Let’s examine this passage carefully. First, God calls Jeremiah by name. There can be no mistake about who he is addressing. Second, he reminds Jeremiah of who He is, “I am your Creator.”
Third, God informs the prophet that he is no afterthought, and before you were born… God had this young person on his mind, in his heart and in his plans - before he was born. Wow!
Next, God goes on to reveal HIS plans for Jeremiah, I chose you to speak for me to the nations. Wow, and wow again! Jeremiah does not need to spend years upon years wondering what his purpose in life is because God, himself has made it clear. Jeremiah is to speak for God to the nations. What an awesome privilege, honor and, yes, what a tremendous assignment for such a young person. As a young person you probably can relate to Jeremiah’s mindset. However, reread the words of God and listen closely to what He is saying here.
Let me suggest that you reread it out loud and substitute your own name in the place of Jeremiah’s. What do you hear God saying to you about the plans he has for you? Jeremiah was not the only one on God’s mind. He also thought of you before you were born and he stamped a divine assignment on your life. Can you see it? Will you R.S.V.P.?
There is a nation waiting on you to make a special delivery from God. He will put his words in your mouth and as he instructed Jeremiah, don’t leave out a word. Do not be afraid because he promises to be with you and to keep you.
During this month that is set aside as Black History Month and Teen Dating Violence Awareness why not take some time and tell someone about the rich history of Black people and tell some teen how special he/she is to God. Tell them that before they were born, God created them to speak for him to the nation. Someone needs to hear that and you could be the one God chose to go tell.
As believers we are called to encourage one another, to edify one another and to build one another up, not tear each other down or cause one to feel less than. We are all special in the eyes of God and we find this truth in his word. His word will not return to him void. Whatever he sends it to do shall come to pass. Somebody is waiting on this message to come from your mouth. Do not deny them the joy of hearing it and do not rob God of the opportunity to use you as his chosen vessel.
